MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Sweater & Afghan Yarn (2 oz pull skein):
Color A: Winter White—6 skeins
Color B: Brown—4 skeins
Color C: Avocado #4—3 skeins
Color D: Gold—2 skeins
Color E: Tangerine—2 skeins
Color F: Avocado #2—2 skeins
Knitting Needles: One “Boye” circular needle Size 10½ and one steel crochet hook Size 00
Gauge: 9 sts to 2 inches; 6 rows to 1 inch
With Color A—cast on 211 sts firmly. Do Not Join. K 1 row and P 1 row. Break off Color A.
Note: Carry unused yarn loosely across wrong side of work.
** Row 1—Right side: With B—K 1, * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * across.
Row 2—Wrong side: Repeat Row 1.
Rows 3 & 4: K 1 row and P 1 row.
Rows 5 & 6: With C—K 1, * sl 2, K 1, repeat from * across.
Row 7: K 2 C, * 3 B, 3 C, repeat from * across, end K 3 B, K 2 C. Break off B.
Row 8: With C—P 3, * sl 1, P 5, repeat from * across, end sl 1, P 3.
Rows 9 through 14: With C—K 1 row and P 1 row for 6 rows.
Row 15: With C—K 2, * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * across, end sl 1, K 2.
Row 16: With C—P 2, * sl 1, P 1, repeat from * across, end sl 1, P 2.
Rows 17 & 18: K 1 row and P 1 row.
Rows 19 & 20: With B—K 1, * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * across. Break off B.
Row 21: K 1 C, * 2 A, 1 C, repeat from * across.
Row 22: * P 1 A, 1 C, 3 A, 1 C, repeat from * across, end P 1 A.
Row 23: K 2 A, * 1 C, 1 A, 1 C, 3 A, repeat from * across, end K 2 A instead of 3.
Row 24: P 1 C, * 2 A, 1 C, repeat from * across.
Rows 25 through 28: With A—K 1 row and P 1 row for 4 rows.
Repeat these 28 rows 3 times more substituting D for C on first repeat, E for C on 2nd repeat and F for C on 3rd repeat **.
Repeat from ** to ** twice more then repeat Rows 1 through 20 once more. Break off C.
With A—K 1 row and P 1 row. Bind off firmly.
Steam lightly. Weave in ends. With A—on right side crochet 1 row of sl st, working 1 st in each st on short ends and 1 st in every other row along sides, ch 1, turn. On wrong side, working over the sl st row, crochet 1 row of sc around, inc’ing at corners to keep work flat. Fasten off.
Fringe: Wind Color A around a 6-inch cardboard. Cut at one end. * Fold 2 strands in half. With wrong side of afghan facing you, draw through sc at short end, draw ends through loop and tighten. Repeat from * across each short end, having a multiple of 3 fringes. Braid first 3 fringes tog loosely, knot firmly to fasten, leaving 1-inch ends. * Braid and knot next 3 strands, repeat from * across. Trim ends.
